Four decades after Portugal's accession to the European project, the open class “The Portuguese People: Forty Years of Integration”, held on 18 March, brought together a reflection on the political, economic, and institutional transformations that have marked the country since joining the then European Economic Community.

The session historically framed the path that led to Portuguese accession, highlighting the strategic repositioning of the country after 25 April 1974 and the role of European integration in the consolidation of democracy and national modernisation.

Throughout the initiative, the political, economic, and social impacts of accession were discussed, with reference to the transformation of public policies, the modernisation of infrastructure, the Europeanisation of institutions, and the importance of European funds in the country's development.

The intervention of Irina Melo, a journalist from Agência Lusa, also brought to the debate European journalism, the coverage of institutions in Brussels, and issues related to freedom of the press in Europe.
