Great Artists on Campus: António Júlio Duarte
A photographer and lecturer at ULusófona spoke about his career and creative process during an artist talk

The Portuguese photographer António Júlio Duarte took part in Great Artists on Campus, which took place on 3 March at Universidade Lusófona, in Lisbon.
During the session, the artist gave a talk centred on his artistic career and the creative process he has developed over several decades in contemporary photography. The talk also addressed some of the recurring themes in his work, characterised by the observation of cities in motion, people in everyday life, and unexpected situations that make up what he himself describes as his "map of the world".
António Júlio Duarte, who studied photography at the Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual and was a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation fellow at the Royal College of Art in London, has been exhibiting regularly since 1990 and has established himself as one of the most consistent voices in contemporary Portuguese photography.
Among his solo exhibitions, notable works include CRIATURA (2021), Eclipse (2020), White Noise (2017), América (2017), and Mercúrio (2015). His work also forms part of major institutional collections, including the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, the Fundação de Serralves, and the Musée de la Photographie Charleroi.
The session concluded with a question-and-answer segment, encouraging dialogue between the artist and the academic community in attendance.
