On 21 February, a group of students from the Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at Lusófona University took part in a guided visit to the exhibition “Filhos de todos… Filhos de quem? Os Expostos da Roda de Lisboa”, on display at the Museu de São Roque, in Lisbon, accompanied by Professor Hélia Bracons.

The exhibition invites reflection on the history of the “Roda dos Expostos” and the social responses created to support abandoned children, highlighting social protection practices that profoundly shaped interventions in childhood in Portugal.

This visit represented a moment of critical learning, enabling the articulation of historical content with the foundations of contemporary Social Work, particularly regarding the protection of children and young people, social policies, institutionalisation and the defence of children’s rights.

Understanding the past is essential to enhance intervention in the present and to strengthen the ethical commitment to social justice and human dignity.
