ULusófona hosts a European meeting linking cinema and science

Lusófona University - Porto University Centre hosted, between 23 and 27 March, the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) entitled “Agora – FilmEU Mapping the Narrative of STEAM”, an initiative integrated into the internationalisation strategy of the FilmEU – European University alliance, with the aim of bringing together different perspectives from the community to discuss the main challenges in higher education in the fields of film and media, promote knowledge exchange and stimulate the creation of ideas with a positive impact on academia and society. The meeting brought together lecturers, students and staff members from the eight higher education institutions that make up the consortium.

For this purpose, the “Agora” group was formed, composed of 16 students and 8 staff members, representing all partner schools. Throughout the week, participants worked collaboratively on the development of this document, which seeks to reflect on the integration of the arts within the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The project is based on the idea that the audiovisual sector already integrates, in practice, several dimensions, from the use of technology to the artistic component, as well as engineering processes in production and budget management, highlighting a natural connection between these areas.

Among the invited speakers were Rebecca Kirrane and Caoimhin O’Conghaile, from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, who delivered the session “The Art of Simulation – Crafting Immersive Learning Experiences for Healthcare Professionals”, where they explored realistic simulation techniques applied to healthcare training, combining special effects with scientific knowledge.

The Operations Manager at the Institute of Art Design + Technology (IADT) and participant in the project, Linda Carroll, highlighted the importance of holding this BIP, noting that without it, without these programmes and without bringing students together in a single space, it would not have been possible to achieve the results obtained.
