EP64 - Generation Z, STIs and Sexual Health w/ Sofia de Melo Refoios
The latest episode of the “Direta Sem Café” podcast addresses a topic that deserves increasing attention: the relationship between Generation Z and the worrying rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
In an open and informed conversation, we have the special participation of Dr. Sofia de Melo Refoios, clinical psychologist and scientific researcher, who brought an in-depth view of the sexual behaviours of today’s youth and the challenges in raising awareness about sexual health.
Generation Z grew up surrounded by technology, with easy access to information and new means of communication, including social media and dating apps. However, as Dr. Sofia highlights, unlimited access to information has not been enough to reduce the number of STIs among young people.Although young people have more tools at their disposal, there seems to be a lack of real awareness about the risks and the importance of prevention. During the conversation, we addressed crucial questions such as: why are STIs increasing among Generation Z? What is failing in sexual education, and how has technology influenced the perception of sexual health? And what role do families and schools play in promoting a more open conversation about sex?
The lack of dialogue between parents and children was also an important point of the debate. Many young people still feel uncomfortable talking about sex with their parents, which can hinder the acquisition of correct information on how to protect themselves. Dr. Sofia stresses the importance of more open and taboo-free communication, both at home and in schools, to ensure that Generation Z is properly informed.
