The module “Digital Communication Lab” is part of the curriculum of the Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences, offering a practical and technical approach to digital media. The module explores sound as a medium for communication and expression, developing key skills for the production and editing of audio content for journalistic, advertising, documentary or artistic purposes. Its relevance lies in the growing importance of digital audio in today’s media ecosystem, with podcasting being one of the most prominent and widely used formats in social, institutional and independent communication.

Sound in media: history and languages Sound recording: microphones, environments and voice capture Digital sound editing: cuts, fades, layering Introduction to sound design: effects and soundscape construction Use of samples and file formats (MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC) Sound mixing and post-production: equalisation, spatialisation and compression (with or without iA) Podcast creation and production: scripting, sound identity and narrative Distribution and publishing: platforms, formats and audiences

Objectives
Objectives
The main objectives of the module are: to equip students with technical and creative knowledge in sound recording, editing and montage; to develop critical listening and sensitivity to sound-based discourse; and to understand the fundamentals of audio language as an autonomous and multimodal form of communication. Students should be able to plan and produce a structured audio piece, applying recording and mixing techniques and using professional editing software.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
This module is based on active and experiential methodologies, focusing on learning through practice. Classes combine technical workshops, critical analysis exercises, guided listening sessions, and collaborative production moments. Students work in a lab environment, using audio-specific software and hardware. The podcast project is developed throughout the semester as an integrative learning tool.
