Class Urban Planning 1.1

The CU is the introduction to city study. It presents Urbanism through two main areas: theoretical content and practical application. It focuses on the study of urban form, framed by key urban planning theories, to understand the past, present, and future of cities; and presents itself as an instrument for architectural practice. The aim is to give students tools to approach Project 2 (design in a consolidated urban context), using elements of urban form for analysis and conscious design of buildings and public spaces in the city. The CU is relevant within the MIA study plan, where the multidisciplinary pedagogical program is emphasized, along with the central role of the Project and the horizontal coordination of CUs within each academic year, as well as the vertical coordination across scientific areas. Enrolment and attendance in the CU require prior approval in the Project 1 CUs. The CU has prerequisites from one semester to the next, and from one academic year to the following year.

Understanding the urban environment of Project 2.1. Urban development of Lisbon and Porto in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Selection of plans from the 19th and 20th centuries. Geographic and historical framework, plan principles, and framework within the main urban theories. Morphological analysis as a tool for interpretation and design/proposal. Design in the consolidated city: relationship between the built space and the private and public open space. Critical analysis of the proposal for Project 2.1.

This CU, along with the broader Study Plan it is part of, is built around an innovative, student-centered teaching and learning approach. This methodology emphasizes personalized guidance and ongoing evaluation, with the second year's teachers collaborating to assess each student's development and acquisition of key skills.
