Liliana Ventura Mendes

Resume

Liliana Patrícia Ventura Mendes, born in Felgueiras in 1984, is a psychologist and researcher currently affiliated with the School of Psychology and Life Sciences, Universidade Lusófona (EPCV). She has collaborated extensively with the Institute of Applied Nuclear Sciences for Health (ICNAS/CIBIT) and previously served as an invited assistant professor in the Departments of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and of Education and Psychology at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. Her work is situated within the Social Sciences, particularly Psychology, with a strong emphasis on Neuropsychology and technology-based health innovation. She completed her PhD in Psychology in 2015 at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, specializing in applications of virtual reality in neuropsychological intervention, and subsequently completed a PhD course in Sport Sciences focused on Sport, Excellence, Well-Being, and Human Development. In 2019, she received the Health and Wellbeing Prize at the 9th Edition of the Montepio Acredita Portugal Competition for the e-rehab project. In April 2020, she concluded an FCT Post-Doctoral fellowship at ICNAS/CIBIT in the BIGDATIMAGE project, dedicated to developing neuroimaging big data platforms for biomarker discovery through computational modelling and clinical research. She has authored several national and international publications in books and indexed journals, participates actively in scientific and pedagogical initiatives in Portugal and abroad, collaborates with research and development units, and has extensive experience in postgraduate training. She has also served on external juries for the evaluation of research projects in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Alongside her academic work, she is engaged in community-oriented initiatives addressing societal challenges, maintaining a strongly interdisciplinary perspective across health, technology, and human development. My research is centered on the development, validation, and implementation of digital health solutions for cognitive assessment, rehabilitation, and active ageing. I´m particularly interested in the use of telemedicine, neurotechnology, and digital platforms to support individuals with cognitive impairment associated with ageing, acquired brain injury, or neurodegenerative conditions. My work explores how technology-based interventions, such as telerehabilitation systems, portable neurofeedback, gamification, and virtual or mobile applications, can promote cognitive functioning, autonomy, and quality of life while ensuring accessibility and scalability across clinical and community settings. I adopt an interdisciplinary and translational approach, integrating psychology, neuroscience, and intelligent systems to design evidence-based interventions and evaluate them through feasibility studies, clinical trials, and real-world implementation. Overall, my work aims to contribute to innovative models of care that support healthy ageing, early detection of cognitive decline, and personalized neurorehabilitation in increasingly digitalized health-care environments.
