Soraya Vasconcelos

Resume

SORAYA VASCONCELOS is a visual artist, Auxiliary Professor at Lusófona University (Lisbon) and researcher at CICANT (Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies). She has a degree in painting, studied photography and philosophy and has a PhD in Communication, Culture and the Arts (2014, UAlg). As an academic, she focuses on the creative process and artistic research, finding in visual essays and publications a bridge to her artistic practice, which includes photography, drawing, and installation. She was a full-time researcher for O Impulso Fotográfico [the Photographic Impulse] (ICNOVA 2019-22), centered on a decolonial analysis of photographic material produced by Portuguese colonial science; she was co-curator of the exhibition (des)arrumar o Arquivo Colonial at MUHNAC (Dec. 2022 – ongoing). Recent projects (2025) include the online residency RAUM Fotonovelo and Cocktail do Mês, both of which are collective explorations of publication formats (photo novel and pamphlet). She participitated in Vermelho Vivo, Amor e Revolução [Bright Red, Love and Revolution curated by Angela Berlinde at Museu de Imagem e Som (MIS) Ceará, Brazil 2024; Artistic Research Exhibition 2023 – (Genk, Belgium and online); Spectrum (Hélice, 2022), having collaborated with Propeller magazine (Hélice 2017-19); Imagens com Vida Própria (curated by Sandra Vieira Jürgens; Bienal Fotografia VFXira 2018); proposed and coordinated, with Susana Gaudêncio, the Estação Vernadsky project (Sines and Lisbon 2017-18), which included an artistic residency, exhibitions, a website, and a book.
