Class Road Infrastructures

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The curricular unit provides knowledge in transportation infrastructures, addressing the aspects related to the geometric definition, being complemented, in the 2nd cycle, by the curricular units "Transportation Infrastructure" which focuses on various constructive technologies and "Road Infrastructure Management", which focuses on the management of road infrastructures.

    Syllabus

    1. Transport and transport infrastructures

Comparison between different transport modes, aspects of complementarity

    2. Road planning

National and local planning.  National road networks. Their general characteristics and responsible entities.

    3. Road project

Phasing of the project. Conditioning restrictions for geometric definition. Constructive technologies.

    4. Alignment and longitudinal profile

Constraints for geometric definition. Normative requirements. Relationship between of road geometry and users.

    5. Cross section profile

Elements of a road in cross section. Cross-sectional profiles and their relationship to the level of service.

    6. Junctions

Typology and characteristics of intersections and interchanges. Selection criteria.

    4. Constructive technologies

Basic elements of earthworks, drainage, paving and safety equipment.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

It is intended that students acquire knowledge necessary for the conception and design of transport infrastructures, particularly in the field of road infrastructure geometry and basic concepts concerning earthworks, drainage, paving and safety equipment.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

Active teaching methodology places the student at the centre of the learning process. Students are encouraged to solve autonomously exercises for evaluation, having the opportunity to discuss with their peers the methodology to solve the problems. This process will allow students to develop critical thinking, increasing their problem-solving capacity. In this process, students will have the opportunity to solve exercises and practical work close to a road project.
