Syllabus
The journalistic and communicational coverage of the ongoing campaign for the local and presidential elections in Portugal. Key notions in politics and political journalism. The Public Sphere and its conceptualization as part of the modern process of doing politics. The emergence of modern states. Transformations resulting from the advent of new technologies. Points of intersection and characterization of the fields of politics and media. Political argumentation and media distortion. Journalism as the Fourth Estate? An empirical perspective on emerging dynamics. Comparative democracy with application to current political contexts and presentation of practical case studies.

Objectives
Objectives
Political Journalism will enable students to fully undestand media and political relations and the communication role in the present conditions of modern societies. The students will be prepared to work in that field either as a press adviser in politics or a political reporter. Students will understand the information process and its dynamic influence.

Teaching methodologies
Classes include a lecture-based component, complemented by the presentation of practical case studies, followed by discussion, critique, and collaborative debate among all participants.

Assessment
A avaliação contínua é valorizada na ponderação dos elementos específicos de atribuição de classificação. Estes são:
- Exame oral a 15 ou 22 de outubro, data a marcar entre professora e estudantes. 25% da nota final.
- Teste a 3 de dezembro. 50% da nota final.
- Entrega do trabalho final de grupo a 17 de dezembro. 25% da nota final.
As aulas incluem uma parte expositiva complementada com a apresentação de casos práticos a que é acrescentada a discussão, crítica e debate cooperante entre todos.

Continuous assessment is valued in the weighting of specific grading elements. These are:
• Oral exam on October 15th or 22nd, date to be scheduled between the professor and students. 25% of the final grade.
• Test on December 3rd. 50% of the final grade.
• Submission of the final group project on December 17th. 25% of the final grade.The classes include an expository part complemented by the presentation of practical cases, followed by discussion, critique, and cooperative debate among all participants.
The quality of in-class interventions will be evaluated.
The use of artificial intelligence is part of the tools available to students, but its use and identification must be clearly stated.
