This curricular unit will enable students to obtain adequate and in-depth knowledge of the concepts and issues related to the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). It will focus on the main orientations of the CFSP - fundamentals, threats, and opportunities in a globalized and polarized world ¿ but also of the internal-external security nexus of the EU (e.g. multilateralism, soft power, and transatlantic relations) and of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

- Defining concepts - dilemmas and theorizing.
- The Evolution of Security and Defense Policies of the European Union (EU): - From 1945 to the Maastricht Treaty.
- From Maastricht to the European Constitution.- Values and interests in post-Lisbon EU foreign policy.
- The Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).
- The European External Action Service (EEAS).
- The military interventions of the EU.
- Rethinking the future of the EU: new strategic partnerships and new geostrategic challenges.

Objectives
Objectives
This curricular unit will allow students to train and deepen their analytical and critical strengths grasping and discussing, in a gradual and methodological way, the most relevant issues related to the external and security dimensions of the EU, as well as its defence and security policies, and underlying rationale. The student will develop analytical skills that will allow him/her to approach, in a structured and scientific way, the most relevant subjects related to the external and security dimensions of the EU.
