Presentation
This course unit studies language use in context, analysing how speakers construct and interpret meaning in concrete communicative situations. It addresses topics such as speech acts, implicature, reference, deixis, linguistic politeness, and the relationship between language, context and social interaction. The unit contributes to an understanding of language as a communicative and cultural practice, while developing skills in discourse analysis, interpretation of communicative phenomena, and critical reflection on the processes of meaning-making in Portuguese.

1. Pragmatics within the field of linguistic description, including its key concepts and analytical approaches. 2. Dynamics of language interaction, social relevance and the understanding of the world within the multilingual context of communicative activity. 3. Discourse competence and organisation from the perspective of strategies and approaches for language acquisition by non-native speakers.

Objectives
Objectives
The course aims to equip students with knowledge and skills relating to the particularities and manifestations of linguistic phenomena, providing: a) The acquisition of analytical tools that enable the understanding of linguistic productions resulting from the natural evolution of language in relation to its underlying regularities; b) The promotion of critical reflection on linguistic issues arising from everyday language use; c) An emphasis on the semantic, syntactic, lexical, pragmatic and sociolinguistic dimensions that shape Portugal's intercultural reality, particularly the dynamics involved in learning Portuguese among immigrant communities whose mother tongue is not Portuguese; d) An understanding of the construction of linguistic productions and their implications for the teaching of Portuguese.
