Presentation
The course unit of Brazilian Literature is part of the BA in Portuguese Studies as a key space for engaging with one of the richest and most influential literary traditions within the Lusophone world. Embedded in a degree programme that responds to the contemporary challenges facing the Portuguese language, this unit contributes to a broad understanding of the cultural, historical and aesthetic diversity of the Portuguese-speaking world. Throughout the semester, students explore major works and authors of Brazilian literature, from the colonial period to the present day, fostering a critical and contextualised reading of texts.

The legacy of Machado de Assis and linguistic experimentation: a) the unreliable narrator: Chico Buarque, Budapeste; b) linguistic experimentation in poetry and short fiction: (i) Manuel Bandeira, Libertinagem (selected poems); (ii) Clarice Lispector, Laços de Família ("A imitação da rosa" and "Laços de família"); (iii) João Guimarães Rosa, Primeiras Estórias ("A terceira margem do rio").
