This course unit, integrated within the Bachelor's Degree in Portuguese Studies, provides a fundamental introduction to the study of literature, offering students the conceptual and methodological tools essential for understanding literary and cultural phenomena in the Portuguese language. As part of a degree programme designed to address the contemporary challenges facing the Portuguese language in both national and international contexts, this course unit contributes to the development of analytical, interpretative and critical reflection skills concerning literary texts, understood as forms of aesthetic expression, knowledge construction and cultural transmission.

Objectives
Objectives
This course aims to systematise the basics of literary theory, applying this theory to the reading of a corpus that mainly includes works of contemporary Portuguese literature. In pedagogical terms, it aims to provide practical tools so that students can analyse and interpret literary texts, enabling them to discuss aspects that concern, for example, the concept of Literature, reception studies or genre theory. It seeks to provide students with the fundamental bases of academic metalanguage, giving them the tools to read and produce critical texts throughout their university and professional career.
