This course unit (CU) is the first of five dedicated to the study of art and visual culture, structured in a chronological, sequential logic, beginning with the earliest known manifestations of human artistic production and ending in the present day. In this CU, we focus on a time period that spans from Prehistoric art to Roman art in Portugal. A well-founded understanding of artistic production throughout history in different cultural contexts allows students to develop a critical eye and acquire a solid visual culture that will form an important basis for their work as artists.

Teaching methodologies
Interactive classes, based on a dynamic relationship with the group. The projection of images of works of art from the artistic periods under study, focusing on the Portuguese case, the reading of texts, and the showing of short films will be the starting point for analysis and joint discussion. To enhance dialogue, the various themes are presented in advance. Continuous assessment will be based on three elements: a project to be completed throughout the semester (40%), small projects that will be assigned and presented in class (20%), and attendance (40%).
