Presentation
Until the beginning of the 20th century, the main structure of the buildings was based on simple shapes with stone masonry walls and wooden columns and beams. In the second half of the 20th century, with the increasing pace of construction, with the increase of spaces and the complexity of forms and with the implementation of relatively short construction deadlines, it was necessary to look for new construction techniques and processes, giving rise to the industrialization of construction and the emergence of reinforced concrete as the reference in terms of resistant construction material. Thus, despite recognizing the importance and the role of metallic and mixed structures, this course will focus on design aspects of reinforced and prestressed concrete building structures.

Syllabus
Introduction to reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Structural design (general considerations, structural systems, structural elements, building materials, design of structures, foundations, costs of a current building, criteria to be respected in a current building, possible pathologies due to poor structural design. General security verification criteria. Pre-dimensioning (columns, beams and slabs). Design of structures in seismic regions. Flat slabs.

Objectives
Objectives
First contact with the design of resistant building structures. Familiarize students with the structural design of current reinforced concrete buildings. Fundamentals of vertical and horizontal actions. Fundamentals on general structural safety verification criteria. Introduction to national and European structural regulations. Familiarize students with simple criteria for pre-dimensioning structural elements. Practical work - delivery of an architectural project for a building, where the student is invited to develop and deliver at the end of the semester a structural design study on the distribution of the resistant structural elements, in plan and in height.
