Class Galenic Pharmacy

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Galenic Pharmacy presents students' first specific contact with the field of medicines, introducing the main pharmaceutical dosage forms and to the principles underlying their design, preparation, and use. The course unit focuses particularly on compounded medicines, covering the different types of preparations that can be produced, as well as aspects related to their development, production, control, stability, packaging, and dispensing. Due to its applied nature, this course unit contributes to the acquisition of core competencies for pharmaceutical practice, promoting an understanding of the pharmacist's role in the individualized preparation of medicines and in ensuring their quality, safety, and suitability for the patient.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

After completing the curricular unit, students should be able to correctly use the Portuguese Pharmacopoeia and the Galenic Formulary, as well as understand the fundamental principles associated with the main pharmaceutical dosage forms, with particular focus on those most commonly used in compounded medicines. Students should also be able to recognise the characteristics of liquid and semi-solid dosage forms, identify the role of different excipients in formulations, and select the most appropriate preparation, packaging, and storage methods. This CU also aims to develop students' ability to apply good practices in the preparation of compounded medicines, ensuring the quality, safety, and suitability of formulations for the patient.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

The UC consists of theoretical classes, practical classes, and field research.   The theoretical classes are lecture-based and follow the syllabus defined in accordance with the course unit's learning objectives, while encouraging students' active participation through gamification.   Practical classes deepen the content taught, with respective integration through the use of design thinking, flipped classroom and experimental work. Group work is based on an active learning strategy based on real problems in the pharmaceutical profession.   The field research includes a study visit to a Compound Laboratory in the context of Community Pharmacy, being one of the activities included in the Week of Contact with the Pharmaceutical Profession.

    60%

Frequências escritas (média mínima de 9 valores) - A

    40%

    Componente tutoreada - B
