Class Orientation Seminar

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This curricular unit is an introduction to scientific research and culture in the areas of information technology and computer science.

Students will attend seminaries where they will be able to apprehend basic concepts of the scientific research process, while being encouraged to apply these concepts themselves. The application of these concepts, both theoretical and practical, in the remaing curricular units (in particular while writing the thesis proposal) is one of the major outcomes of the UC.

    Objectives

The learning objectives of this curricular unit are:

    - the ability to read and analyse, in a critical manner, a scientific publication. The student should be able to identify its main contributions and sinthetyze them in a structured written and/or oral communication.

    - to have a clear view of the scientific investigation process, in particular the moment of bibliographic research. The student should be able to execute the latter autonoumosly.

    - the ability to structure the state of the art of a given scientific area, identifying gaps that lead to research questions.

    - to have a notion of the scientific publishing process, and to be able to identify a publishing strategy.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

Although there will be a few tradicional classes in this curricular unit, in most sessions the teacher will assume a less active role - in particular, in journal club sessions or in the discussions after seminars the teacher will mostly act as a moderator, encouraging student participation but avoiding imposing his own vision.

Evaluation itself will consist, partly, of student presentations.

It has been shown that similar models, including "flipped classroom" moments, increase student participation and enhance knowledge retention.
