Class Design Technologies II

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The Design Technologies II Curricular Unit expands the field of Communication Design by exploring its application to printing processes and graphic integration in industrial products. Visual communication is understood as extending beyond conventional graphic media, intervening directly in the surface, identity, differentiation and communicative value of products. The CU addresses technologies, materials and printing processes associated with industrial production, combining technical knowledge, experimentation and the development of design solutions. This expansion of areas of intervention constitutes a distinctive component of the study cycle, enabling students to operate at the intersection of communication, product and industry and reinforcing one of the key strengths of Communication Design education.

  • Syllabus

    Syllabus

The syllabus is organised through a progression of technological and project complexity. Each topic corresponds to a practical project area, combining printing processes, experimentation and the development of Communication Design proposals for different products, industrial contexts and markets. Printing Technologies for Flooring and Coverings Exploration of printing processes, materials, surfaces, formats, patterns, repetition and scale applied to flooring, coverings and ceramics. Printing Technologies in the Textile Industry Exploration of printing processes applied to different textile materials, considering patterns, colour, repetition, scale and the relationship between surface and product. Printing Technologies in Furniture Exploration of printing technologies and processes applied to furniture surfaces and components, relating materials, graphic language, product and context of use.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The learning objectives of Design Technologies II focus on the knowledge and application of printing and graphic reproduction technologies used in different industrial contexts, namely flooring and coverings, ceramics, tapestry, textiles and furniture. Students are expected to understand the specific characteristics of processes, materials and substrates, acquiring skills to adapt visual communication solutions to technical production requirements. Through project practice, they develop research, experimentation and graphic design skills applied to industrial products, relating visual language, identity, differentiation and context of use. Students also develop the ability to interpret the markets targeted by these industries and to conceive Communication Design proposals that add value, meaning and competitiveness to products.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

The innovative methodologies are based on expanding the field of Communication Design to products and industrial contexts traditionally associated with other areas. Learning takes place through project practices applied to flooring and coverings, textiles and furniture, in which students explore different printing technologies, materials and production processes. Experimentation enables them to understand the possibilities and constraints of each technology and to transfer visual communication knowledge between different products and industrial sectors. Engagement with real production and market contexts strengthens the relationship between learning and professional practice, broadening students' understanding of the fields in which communication designers can operate and diversifying their opportunities for professional integration.
