This curricular unit aims to discuss the role of international relations in the context of a growing economic and political globalization. The defense of national interests of the states, as well as the related attempt to develop a more assertive foreign policy in a international framework increasingly interdependent and guided by cooperation, oblige the states to think strategically the integration models (regional and international) that can best help meet their respective agendas. After analyzing and framing the origins of international organizations, along with their characteristics, we will proceed to the study of international political organizations, following regional organizations to conclude with a review of the role of Non-Governmental Organizations. It is important to understand and problematize the future of political integrations in a world dealing with crescent challenges.

Genesis and evolution of international organizations; Characteristics of international organizations; International political organizations: from League of Nations to UN; The role of UN in the world, their specialized agencies and the instruments for conflict resolution; European Union and the instruments of economic and political integration; Organization of the American States (OAS) as an integration model in the American continent; The origins of NATO and its strategic concept; Two examples of African integration: SADC and African Union; Lusophony: from common ties to integration (PALOP and CPLP); Non-Governmental Organizations: between past, present and future;

Objectives
Recognize the plurality of international relations and their role in the international political system; Justify the emergence of international organizations and regional organizations in the last decades; Know the goals and general functioning of the organizations presented; Understand the origins of the League of Nations and the reasons for its dissolution; Comprehend the genesis, work and need of reform of United Nations (UN); Frame the role of the European Union in the promotion of peace in the old continent and the deepening of its political role; Explain the functioning of the Organization of the American States (OAS); Contextualize the emergence of NATO and its affirmation as a pole of stability in Europe; Problematize African integrations from SADC and African Union to CPLP; Question the current and future role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO);

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Classes draw on the exposition, debate and deepening of the topics encompassed by the syllabus. Participation of the students will be encouraged in order to reinforce learning, assuming greater relevance on the moment of analysis and presentation of working groups related to topics taught in class. The contínuous evaluation encompasses: exam (50%) and one written group paper with respected oral presentation by each of the members (50%).
