Presentation
The course unit focuses on architectural design practice in the fields of building and rehabilitation, promoting the articulation between conceptual thinking and instrumental skills. It aims to develop the ability to conceive, interpret, and transform architectural space with critical awareness of place, morphology, and programmatic requirements. In the field of building, it explores the creation of new architectural structures, with special attention to urban integration, formal coherence, and technical and constructive resolution. In the field of rehabilitation, it fosters an understanding of the existing built environment, promoting sustainable approaches to continuity, transformation, and heritage valorisation. The course encourages research, design experimentation, and well-grounded presentation of proposals, fostering the development of a critical, creative, and informed approach to contemporary contexts in architectural practice.

The programme focuses on the design of buildings in changing urban contexts, integrating the areas of construction and rehabilitation. The intervention promotes the articulation between scales, from the general to the particular and the critical exploration of urban and architectural problems. The construction of form and contemporary design methodologies is worked on throughout the semester, with the support of architectural culture classes. A long-term project is developed with two objectives: 1) to define an urban intervention strategy that investigates the architectural object as a whole; 2) the realisation of the singular and complex thematic space in which reflection is sought on the specific programme, architectural formalisation and the deepening of the most sensitive parts of the architectural object, from urban insertion, through morphological-programmatic construction to its formal and material component.

Objectives
Objectives
The skills to be developed in Building and Rehabilitation: - Notions of scale, proportion and rigour. Urban integration and insertion; Spatial and formal organisation in the real place; Interpretation of programme and morphological adequancy; Understanding of the surrounding urban structures and the logic of the proposed transformations; Development of the spatial, formal, and constructive dimensions; Reasoned communication of proposals; Capacity for research and critical synthesis; In Rehabilitation, mastery of the concepts of building on the built; Critical reading of pre-existences and context; Articulation between memory, functionality, and innovation. The objectives are in line with the MIA study plan, where: Is integrated, with values and competences embodied in the Project. Horizontal coordination is adopted between UC's of the same year and vertical coordination of scientific areas.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Methodological model in line with the Bologna Process, focused on the development of competences. Methodology based on: Theoretical critique and use of drawing as a method, memory, image, and project; Phasing in the complexity of project instruments; Exhibitions of paradigmatic projects; Relevant masterclasses; Guest lectures; Exhibition of proposals; Study visits to construction sites. Assessment will be continuous, with assistance required, intermediate phases with collective assessment sessions, favouring the following skills: Conceptual understanding between the lessons learnt and the architectural proposal; Rigour of prepositions; Research, method and introduction of architectural concepts; Understanding of urban insertion and transformation processes; Structuring and materialisation of urban scales and morphologies; Programmatic preposition and morphological adequacy of the architectural object.

Assessment
Assessment
