Seminary Ageing Without Stereotypes: Social Work and Rights of Older Adults
The Social Work Seminar addresses ageism, challenges stereotypes and promotes the dignity, rights and inclusion of older people
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
A round table discussion aims to encourage critical reflection on the myths and stereotypes associated with ageing, examining how they influence social perceptions of old age, professional practices and older people's access to their rights.
Through the participation of three social workers with experience in different intervention contexts, the aim is to demonstrate that many socially widespread beliefs about ageing are not supported by scientific evidence and contribute to the perpetuation of ageism, restricting older people's autonomy, participation and social inclusion.
The activity will take an interdisciplinary approach within the field of Social Work, bringing together research, professional practice and social policies aimed at the older population.
This activity aims to:
- Raise awareness of the existence and impact of myths and stereotypes associated with ageing.
- Promote a scientific and humanistic perspective on ageing.
- Develop critical thinking regarding ageism.
- Encourage professional practices based on human rights and the dignity of older people.
- Foster dialogue between students, lecturers and professionals.
This activity forms part of the Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, specifically within the Social Intervention in Gerontology course unit, in the 3rd year.
