Journeys Maurice Piéron Conference 2026

As Maurice Piéron Conference 2026, organised by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Lusófona University, will take place on 6 and 7 October and will include the opening session of the academic year of the Master’s Degree in Teaching Physical Education in Primary and Secondary Education.

The event aims to provide students, lecturers and professionals in the field of Physical Education and Sport with a space for reflection, knowledge sharing and contact with different perspectives on training and professional practice, promoting links between academic education, research and professional practice.

The Conference continues the collaboration between Lusófona University and Universidade da Corunha, enabling the exchange of experiences and knowledge between the two institutions and bringing together different training and professional practice contexts in the field of Physical Education and Sport. The participation of lecturers and representatives from Universidade da Corunha also provides an opportunity to learn about experiences developed in the Spanish context, particularly in relation to external placements in university education, school sport and public policies promoting physical activity and sport.

In particular, the event aims to:

• Welcome students and mark the beginning of the new academic year of the Master’s Degree in Teaching Physical Education in Primary and Secondary Education;
• Promote reflection on the role, identity and responsibilities of Physical Education teachers in different educational contexts;
• Present different models and experiences of training and external placements in higher education, particularly through contact with the Spanish university context;
• Promote reflection on the skills required for professional practice, leadership, teamwork and conflict management in Physical Education and Sport contexts;
• Share experiences and good practices in the field of School Sport, establishing links between the Portuguese and Galician contexts;
• Explore the framework and experience of Galicia in promoting sport among school-age children, namely through the Xogade programme and its integration with the Plan Galicia Saudable;
• Encourage contact between students and leading professionals and representatives in the fields of Physical Education, School Sport, training and sports management;
• Strengthen academic and scientific cooperation between Lusófona University and Universidade da Corunha, promoting internationalisation and the sharing of experiences;
• Highlight the legacy of Maurice Piéron, presenting his contribution to the development of research and scientific knowledge in the field of Physical Education.

The target audience primarily comprises students and lecturers from the Master’s Degree in Teaching Physical Education in Primary and Secondary Education, as well as students from other study cycles within the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport. The event is also aimed at Physical Education teachers, researchers, higher education lecturers, coaches, sports professionals, School Sport representatives and other professionals working in the field of Physical Education and Sport.

Given its nature and proposed programme, the Conference has an academic, professional and institutional dimension, seeking to create a meeting space between different generations and areas of professional practice and to contribute to a more integrated education for future Physical Education teachers.
