Masterclass Multiplex 2024 - With ORLAN (French Multimedia Artist and Feminist)

On 14 May (Porto) and 17 May (Lisbon), reflect on digital, robotics and artificial intelligence

Start May 17 | 14h00 End May 17 | 18h00

After Nan Goldin in 2022 and Sara Driver in 2023, this year's Multiplex guest is ORLAN, a French performer, multimedia artist and feminist born in 1947.

ORLAN crosses different disciplinary practices such as painting, sculpture, photography and video, as well as installation and performance. Internationally recognized since the 1970s, the cosmetic surgeries she underwent in the 1990s, which became public performances, rituals and moments of affirmation of feminist statements and freedom, brought renewed attention to the artist at a time of reflection on the limits of the body, technology and bioethics. She is currently researching digital media, robotics, artificial intelligence and biotechnology.

She had an exhibition, "Les femmes qui pleurent sont en colère" dedicated to her digital images at the Picasso Museum in Paris in 2022. And a retrospective exhibition at the SESC in São Paulo (Brazil) in 2023.

Multiplex 2024 includes two lectures by ORLAN at Universidade Lusófona, a retrospective cycle of his films at Batalha Centro de Cinema (Porto) and a screening (Lisbon) followed by a debate between ORLAN and French curator Yannick LeGuillanton. To complete the program, a special session is dedicated to the work done by the students of the Audiovisual and Multimedia Communication Degree at Lusófona University at Batalha Centro de Cinema and an exhibition of audiovisual and multimedia installations at Espaço Mira in Porto.
