This seminar provides an introduction to the modern history of the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. The formation and consolidation of these states resulted from the interaction between local hegemonies, British imperialism and the impact of oil exploration and production.

Speaker Profile
Alexandre Caeiro is Associate Professor and Director of the Master’s Programme in Contemporary Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, in Doha, Qatar.
His current research examines the transformations of the Arab States of the Gulf between the 19th and 21st centuries. His most recent publications include “The Appeal of Religious Law: Jurisdictional Politics and Modern State Formation in the Gulf Sheikhdoms, ca. 1950–2000”, published in Law and History Review, 43 (2025), pp. 877–901, and “The Legal Politics of Islamic Bioethics: Drunk Driving and the Reconfiguration of Privacy in the Modern Gulf”, published in the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, 52 (2025), pp. 1154–1172.
