    The discipline of Global Change will provide a general background on Climate and Global Change, from the underlying processes that explain changes in the climate that result in global warming, green house effect and carbon cycle disruption, to anthropogenic global effects such as light pollution.

    In the theoretical sessions, the topics will focus mostly on the consequences on the biological systems, phenology and evolution, as well as on the international legislation and potential mitigation measures. In the practical sessions, students will apply the acquired concepts to solve practical exercises, search and discuss scientific articles, and develop debate skills related to the key environmental challenges at the global scale.

    Syllabus

    • Introduction: Climate and Global Change.
    • The climate system and underlying disruption mechanisms.
    • The global warming. The Green House effect and consequences.
    • Carbon cycle. The effects of anthropogenic changes in the carbon cycle and other cycles.
    • Different types of environmental pollution. Light pollution: a global phenomenon.
    • Changes in the Ecosystems. Examples.
    • Prediction, modelling and scenarios.
    • International politics and legislation. Mitigation measures.
    • Ecosystems services.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    1. Understand the how climate system functions and underlying changes.
    2. Associate climate change with specific effects in the ecosystems and organisms
    3. Understand the phenomena resulting from anthropogenic activity such as global arming and ocean acidification, as well as the main types of pollution and their consequences.
    4. Comprehend the main experimental approaches to answer questions related with the impact of global change on the planet and organisms.
    5. Obtain practice on solving exercises related to the impact of global change.
    6. Train capacity to search and discuss scientific information.
