Objectives
Objectives
The first objective of this curricular unit is to convey general knowledge about the origin of biopotentials, their characteristics, and the common transducers and circuits used in devices for measuring and monitoring physiological parameters. Additionally, students will learn about the main electronic instrumentation for physiological monitoring of biological organisms. Students will become familiar with the main medical devices, their usage, principles of operation, and limitations. They will acquire knowledge about some transducers used in medical devices and understand the relationship between key medical equipment and the diagnostic and therapeutic components.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
In this course module (CM), teaching is based on a series of theoretical sessions, which cover all the fundamental principles of biomedical instrumentation. As part of the practical component, students will develop Arduino code for signal acquisition via biomedical sensors and analyse articles on the latest advances in the various areas of biomedical instrumentation. Assessment will be based on two in-class assessments (accounting for 70% of the mark) (mid-semester and end-of-semester) and the presentation of a dissertation (end of the semester) accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation on the code developed by the students, including diagrams of the sensors, throughout the semester (accounting for 30% of the mark). Students with a mark below 10 will be allowed to sit the final exam. Students with a mark of 9 in the exam will be allowed to sit an oral exam. Students with a mark of 9 or below in the exam will fail the course.

Assessment
Assessment
