Objectives
Objectives
This course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of human genetics and genotoxicity, and how these concepts are applied in biomedical and public health contexts. Students will: Acquire skills in human genetics, with a focus on scientific developments in areas such as genomics and proteomics, understanding fundamental concepts and procedures; Understand the dynamics and significance of damage to the human genome caused by chemical and physical agents, differentiating between carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic genotoxic agents; Assess risk as a function of dose and understand effective measures to minimize or eliminate exposure to these agents, as well as biomonitoring techniques for exposed populations; Develop practical skills in analyzing genetic and genotoxicity data, such as human genome data, mutation analysis, and predicting their effects on proteins and the genotoxicity of various agents.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
The course is assessed on a continuous basis, with two components: theoretical (TC) and laboratory (LC). The CT assessment comprises two examinations (75%) and a written group assignment on specific topics related to genetics and genotoxicity (25%). The CL assessment comprises two elements: the submission of reports (50 %) and a test (40 %). Should a student fail to attain a minimum grade of 9.5, they will be afforded the opportunity to take a practical examination. Furthermore, a continuous assessment component related to participation and performance in practical classes (10 %) will be taken into consideration. The final grade is the result of a weighted average, with 50 % attributed to the CT and 50 % to the CL. Students may opt for the non-continuous assessment, which consists of a final examination requiring a minimum of 9.5 values for approval.
