This class provides an introductory exploration of an interdisciplinary field that unites economic principles with the requirements of environmental sustainability. The course analyzes the evolution of economics, from classical concepts and their implications for the economics of natural resources and sustainability, through ecological and circular economies, and culminating in environmental economics as a paradigm for sustainability. It aims to equip students with the basic tools for a deeper understanding of how it is possible to reconcile economic development with the conservation of natural resources and the environment.

Basic concepts of economics. Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. The environment in schools of economic thought. Evolution of environmental economics; Economic instruments of environmental policy. Concept of externalities; Perspective of sustainable development; Dimension of sustainability; Energy balance; Ecological Footprint; Water Footprint; Carbon Footprint; Climate change, implications for Environmental Economics; Environmental economics and ecological economics; Economics of natural resources; Economic instruments of environmental policy. Payment for environmental services.

Objectives
To view the economy not merely as a financial instrument, but rather as the study and development of the best ways to utilize natural resources from an environmental preservation perspective. Using economics as an important tool for sustainable development, managing resources in a quest to achieve positive externalities for society.

Expository/interrogative method through the presentation of themes and formulation of questions in order to stimulate critical thinking and knowledge retention. Analysis of diverse problems and situations as part of an interrelated whole (holistic approach).
