The main objective of the curricular unit is to provide students with a visual literacy through knowledge, understanding and technological expression in the field of graphic design, more specifically, in the area of editorial design. The curricular structure introduces elements of visual language, technical aspects and methodologies in the treatment and manipulation of digital images and pagination, indispensable for an integrated and creative usage in the development of visual communication records.

Syllabus
Design basics: Typography: families, structure, design, legibility. Composition: support grids, information hierarchy. Colour systems. Image types and formats. Project methodology. Layout of a magazine and composition of advertising pages using the software taught: Adobe Indesign: planning documents, tools. Guides and columns. Master page and document pages. Colours for the document. Page numbering. Organization of the work in layers. Text characterisation. Character and paragraph style. Importation of images. Contour creation. Compilation of elements that compose the document. Adobe Photoshop: working environment, menus, new document, canvas, layers. Selection, framing and colour tools. Masks. Elements of vector shapes, layer styles. Text, colour, colour correction, image correction, filters, effects. Public presentation.

Objectives
Objectives
The Curricular Unit aims to provide students with the technical and conceptual principles essential to a visual communication project, namely at image composition, typography and pagination. These principles aim to serve two main objectives: a coherent and balanced project presentation and an understanding of the processes involved in the field of visual communication that allows a correct dialogue with the professionals of the area.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Learning based on practical exercises carried out in classes. Solidification of learning through the development of practical projects, in order to encourage students to work on projects that can be found in the real world. Critical analysis of existing projects to consolidate and apply the principles of graphic design, specifically of editorial design. Projects developed in groups (newsrooms) in order to encourage collaboration and sharing of knowledge, inter-help, development of social skills and consolidation of learning. Promoting creativity by following up and guiding the project through its different stages. Interdisciplinarity with the Curricular Units Journalistic Genres and Photojournalism.

Assessment
Assessment
A avaliação da UC recai na elaboração de projetos, elaborados individualmente e em grupo, conforme a fase enunciada (60% da nota final), assim como no exercício individual de avaliação (40% da nota final). Os momentos e parâmetros de avaliação encontram-se reunidos em documentos apresentados e partilhados com os discentes na plataforma de ensino Moodle. A entrega de ficheiros para avaliação é igualmente realizada através da plataforma de ensino Moodle.
A avaliação individual do projeto final terá em linha de conta a participação em sala bem como o relatório de autoavaliação, onde constam as percentagens de colaboração de cada aluno. A entrega final do projeto é obrigatória na data estipulada e a ausência em mais de uma avaliação intermédia implica a reprovação na UC em avaliação contínua. Nas apresentações de projeto deverão estar presentes todos os elementos do grupo.
As presenças são registadas no início de casa sessão e deverão corresponder a 75% das aulas lecionadas.
Para exames de Recurso e de Época Especial, solicita-se a entrega de projecto, acrescido de teste prático; os requisitos para os exames encontram-se reunidos num enunciado.
