The course of Discrete Mathematics aims to contribute to the acquisition of a set of skills in students: the ability to assimilate information and to communicate it; the ability of written expression; the ability of oral expression and the ability of mathematical argument. To this end, concepts of mathematical logic, set theory, number theory and computation theory will be studied.

Objectives
Objectives
The main objectives of this unit are: LO1. Apply the elementary properties of the logical and quantification operations; LO2. Developing and analysing mathematical arguments; LO3. Explain the basic concepts of sets and functions and perform elementary operation between these mathematical objects; LO4. Understand the number theory; LO5. Build and understand finite automata and Turing machines; LO6. Contribute for the acquisitoon of a set of skills: ability to assimilate and communicate information, ability to express themselves in writing; ability to express themselves orally.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
The teaching methodology includes the expository method (TM1) to present the contents, the demonstrative method (TM2) to illustrate its application to practical cases and the active method (TM3) to solve classroom exercises. The assessment is made by continuous assessment or written exam.

Assessment
A avaliação de conhecimentos é feita por avaliação contínua ou por prova escrita de exame final.
A avaliação contínua inclui a realização de 3 testes durante as aulas teóricas em datas a definir no início do semestre. A aprovação por avaliação contínua obriga à realização de todos os testes, com nota mínima de 8 valores e à presença em 75% das aulas práticas. Em caso de não aprovação à disciplina pela avaliação contínua, os alunos poderão ser avaliados através de uma frequência final e/ou exame de recurso.
A nota final do aluno poderá ser bonificada entre 0.5 e 1 valor com a presença e resposta correta a perguntas realizadas durante as aulas teóricas.
Alunos com nota final entre 8 e 9.4, caso pretendam, poderão ser sujeitos a uma prova extra, em condições a definir, para obtenção de aprovação.
