    Developmental criminology is a specific branch of criminology that studies the onset, persistence and (eventual) desistance of delinquent behavior within the framework of the criminal career. For this, it is based on longitudinal studies, following individuals over time with the objective of explaining and describing delinquent behavior over time, the risk factors that precede, co-occur or influence such behavior, paying attention to the way life-events influence delinquent behavior.

    Objectives

    The course intends to introduce students to the field of Developmental Criminology, at the level of the main concepts, allowing them to acquire knowledge about criminal, antisocial and delinquent behavior - onset, persistance, stabilization and desistance - at the descriptive, explanatory and applied levels.

    It is intended that students acquire training on:

    • Development Criminology, its objectives, constructs, methods and main issues;
    • Life cycle : routes ; developmental theories and respective theoretical contribution to the enunciation and understanding/explanation of the development of transgressive behaviors;
    • Most relevant longitudinal studies and results;
    • Application of Developmental Criminology to the life cycle and the explanation of delinquent behaviors., as well as its use as an instrument of prevention policies;
    • Cumulatively, the issue of gender is addressed in the context of criminality.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The course is based on theoretical and practical lessons. Expositive, demonstrative, interrogative and active methods are used, favouring student participation and promoting debates.
