    Presentation

Training in drawing through direct teaching and student practice. Introduces drawing processes and technical skills used in animation practice. To equip students with the skills to explore and achieve visual communication through various drawing media.  Initially based on observation, using formal and informal drawing techniques as in the syllabus. - approaches to experimentation and personal expression through skills development. Work is progressive; starting with natural composition, perspective and proportion, applying the rules of informal perspective to real and imaginary subjects. Development of skills more specifically related to animation practice:  - awareness of graphic elements, line quality, tone, texture, positive and negative space - use of geometry and perspective, proportion and shape in the development of the cinematographic frame (composition and spatial design)  - construction of visual narratives (toward storyboarding)

  • Objectives

    Objectives

This unit provides an exploratory introduction to drawing which ensures students have the necessary knowledge for visual communication across art practices. To gain the ability to communicate real or imaginary environments, spaces and objects/subjects effectively through the use of drawn registers which respect the rules of hand drawn representation. To gain the ability to communicate, through representations drawn with geometric accuracy, shapes, dimensions and peculiarities of spaces and objects, in accordance with current standards applicable to the context of production of content in animation. Understand and develop the relationship between technical performance and creativity. Explore style and technique to develop or gain individual approaches (depending on individual skill and experience levels).
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

In this CU innovative methodologies are at the forefront of the teaching-learning process. The combination of theory and practical exercises that allow the students to explore and challenge preconceived ideas about the field of animation are in themselves innovative processes. This CU gives contemporary and historical practitioner contexts, and the students are encouraged to learn from these as well as to devise their own processes of investigation and experimentation. This is done through a methodology of testing known theories alongside experimental practices and approaches. Using individual research for theme and visual story development as well as group work to test ideas and encourage collaboration.

  • Assessment

    Assessment

Assessment of engagement and completion of work in class and homework, including behaviour and attitude to learning:

    • General class and homework - 50%
    • Main Creative BRIEF 1 = 18%
    • Main Creative BRIEF 1 = 22%
    • Creative group BRIEF 2 = 10%

Candidates will be evaluated according to their overall progress and personal effort (amount of work, progress between the first and last exercises and at different points in the semester (accounting for previous experience, etc.) will influence the final mark.

If a student fails the course they have the opportunity to take an exam -  the exam will consist of the presentation of all the set exercises for every class and homework improved if necessary (75% of exam mark) plus an evaluation exercise presented on the exam date equal to the length of one lesson.(25% of exam mark)
