Class Production

he course Production for Animated Film introduces students to the fundamental principles of audiovisual production in the context of animation. It covers the different production roles, concepts of authorship, funding models, and the role of public funding bodies, financial partners, and suppliers in the development of film projects. Throughout the semester, students will analyse real project dossiers to gain insight into professional practices and industry requirements. As a practical component of the course, students will work in groups to simulate an application to the Portuguese Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), based on the 2026 funding regulations, preparing a complete project presentation dossier for an animated film. The course aims to develop students' skills in project planning, organisation, and presentation while familiarising them with professional production procedures and industry standards.

The course covers the fundamentals of film production as applied to animated cinema, including the organisation of the audiovisual industry and the roles of the various professionals involved, with particular emphasis on producers. It explores the concepts of authorship and intellectual property, funding models, public and private funding schemes, and the role of financiers and service providers. The course also examines the regulations of the Portuguese Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA) and the eligibility criteria for its Animated Short Film funding programme. Throughout the semester, students will analyse real project presentation dossiers and, working in groups, will develop a simulated application to the ICA by preparing a complete project dossier. The course combines theoretical and practical components, fostering an understanding of the development, production, and professional presentation of animated film projects.

The course uses teaching and learning methodologies focused on active, collaborative learning and oriented towards professional practice. Through a Project-Based Learning approach, students develop a simulated application to the Portuguese Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), applying knowledge of production, funding, project planning, and presentation within the context of animated film. The analysis of real project dossiers enables students to understand different production strategies and the requirements of the audiovisual industry. Classes include critical discussion, collaborative work, project supervision, and the presentation of outcomes, fostering autonomy, problem-solving skills, and closer engagement with professional practices in the sector.
