The course aims for students to acquire knowledge about the process of European integration, its history and evolution, its theoretical economic foundations and its impact, namely for Portugal. Based on previous knowledge in economics, it is intended that students understand the European reality and analyse and discuss its main challenges and opportunities in a context of globalisation and geopolitical change.

1. Why study the European economy? 2. Getting to know the European Union (EU): History, Institutions, Legislation and Decision-making process. EU history and stages of European integration. Institutions and decision-making. The EU budget Facts, challenges and opportunities. 3. The European Single Market (EUTM) Economic fundamentals, barriers and opportunities. History and characteristics of the EUTM. Policies underpinning the EUTM. Impact of the EUTM. 4. Economic and monetary union (EMU) Brief review of monetary economics. Optimal currency areas. History and characteristics of EMU. Fiscal policy and the Stability and Growth Pact. Euro Crisis and Banking Union. 5. Economic and social cohesion in the European Union. 6. Portugal's experience in the European Union and the Euro. 7. The European Union in the world: current and future challenges. EU priorities 2019-2024 Globalization and competitiveness Other challenges.

Objectives
Students will get in touch with the reality of the European Union, get to know the process of European integration, understand the main characteristics of the single market and economic and monetary union. At the end of the course, students should be able to: To know the history and process of European integration. To know the role of the European institutions, the decision-making process and the different types of European legislation. Know relevant data about the European Union and its budget. Understand the history, rationale and characteristics of the European single market and economic and monetary union. To understand the Portuguese experience in the European Union and the Euro. To analyse the main priorities, challenges and opportunities of the European Union in the current international context. Apply the knowledge in the analysis of practical problems.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
The course combines expository and active methods, which include exposing students to the history, rationale and characteristics of European integration, as well as actively involving students in the preparation and presentation in class of a relevant topic on the European economy. Students will have the opportunity to have a research experience that ends in the presentation in class, providing them with the potential to discover the themes, retain knowledge and apply the concepts learned to practical cases. In addition, students will have to understand economics articles, which require the use of knowledge obtained during the degree, promoting the ability to analyze and discuss.
