A. Contemporary societies, social change and education
- School as a project of modernity;
- Processes of literacy and schooling, and the emergence of mass schooling: the Portuguese case in comparative perspective;
- The school and the challenges of the new post-war economic and social order: disenchantment and uncertainties of post-modernity.
B. The social dimension of education
- Education, social cohesion and integration;
- Education in out-of-school contexts.
C. Access to education and school success/failure
- Inequalities of resources and opportunities, social reproduction and selection: explanatory theories;
- Role and relationship of school with families and the community/territory.
D. Recent developments and issues in the field of sociology of education

Objectives
Objectives
At the end of the Curricular Unit the students will be able to:
- Identify theoretical frameworks and structuring concepts of the field of sociology of education;
- Acquire the capacity to analyze the educational contexts, in connection with the social issues that cross them;
- Problematize the role of education and of the social educator in the framework of the transformation processes and challenges of contemporary societies.

Teaching methods:
- Theoretical exposition (presentation, exploration and synthesis of the contents of the syllabus) in dialogue with the students;
- Analysis of written, iconographic and audiovisual documents, discussion and debate;
- Project work.
