The Fundamentals of Economics and Management course introduces second-year undergraduate students to the core principles of economics and business management, providing them with the knowledge required to understand how organizations operate and make strategic decisions in a dynamic economic environment. Its scope encompasses fundamental concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics, organizational management, business strategy, marketing, finance, accounting, entrepreneurship, and innovation, with a particular emphasis on their application in engineering and technology-driven organizations. As an integral component of the degree programme, the course enables students to develop an understanding of the economic, financial, and managerial dimensions of engineering activities

Syllabus
Basic concepts of business economics. Fundamental concepts of business management. Competitive markets versus monopoly and oligopoly (deadweight loss). Economic systems, market structures, and the role of the government. Organizational theories and competitive strategies (cost leadership versus differentiation). Supply and demand theory, including types of goods and price elasticity. Market and business analysis (SWOT analysis). Organizational strategy (mission, vision, strategic intent, and objectives). Organizational structures and the value chain. Learning organizations and innovation. Marketing principles and pricing theory. Financial analysis and financial ratios. Production and operations management, including supply chain management. Inventory management theories and models.

Objectives
Objectives
To offer a comprehensive understanding of how the economy functions and its importance for all stakeholders, with a particular focus on the energy sector. Furthermore, the course seeks to ensure that students acquire a solid understanding of the main principles of management and develop an integrated perspective of its different functional areas. In terms of knowledge, skills, and competencies, students are expected to be able to interpret concepts, theories, and policies related to the functioning of the economy and the overall management of organizations. By the end of the course, students should be able to: Understand how the economy operates, within the framework of the principles of supply and demand. Understand the different functional areas of management and how they are interconnected. Apply key management concepts, methods, and tools. Apply management methods and tools to the analysis and discussion of real-world case studies.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Lectures, in which the instructor presents the fundamental theoretical concepts and reference frameworks. Interactive classes, where students are encouraged to participate actively in discussions and explore practical examples drawn from real-world business and engineering contexts. Problem-solving sessions, involving the resolution of exercises to consolidate theoretical knowledge. Active learning methodologies, including Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Cooperative Learning, and the use of concept maps and mind maps, supported by both individual and group assignments. Case studies, based on real-world examples that enable students to apply economic and management concepts to practical situations, strengthening their analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
