This curricular unit aims to introduce some theoretical concepts of International Relations as a scientific domain, putting them in perspective, then focus on the construction of modern state and frame Westphalia in the emergent international political system. The goal is to analyze the historical evolution of International Relations till present time and also identify the key players and contemporary challenges.

- The Peace of Westphalia and its implications; - Relations between major European powers before and after the Congress of Vienna (Napoleonic Wars and the Vienna system); - Causes and consequences of World War I; - From the League of Nations to World War II; - Cold War: tension, détente and consequences; - Fall of the Berlin Wall, end of the bipolar world and American hegemony; - The world after 9/11: American decline e other threats; - The rise of China and Thucydides Trap; - States and international organizations in dialogue;

Objectives
- Analyze concepts and theories in the field of History of International Relations; - Understand the complex political evolution of Europe since 17th century; - Identify the particularities of the state in the new international order; - Connect the role of the states with other political actors in the last century; - Highlight the role of the Law in International Relations; - Distinguish most memorable moments and episodes in the History of International Relations; - Recognize challenges and contemporary threats in an international context of disciplinary consolidation of International Relations in dialogue with other sciences;

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Classes draw on the exposition, debate and deepening of the topics encompassed by the syllabus. Participation of the students will be encouraged in order to reinforce learning, assuming greater relevance on the moment of analysis and presentation of working groups related to topics taught in class. The contínuous evaluation encompasses: written exam (50%) and one written group paper with respected oral presentation by each of the members (50%).

Data a combinar entre alunos e docente. Apresentação com uma duração mínima de 15 minutos, devendo enfatizar as ideias principais e conclusões da investigação. Os alunos poderão recorrer dos meios que considerem mais adequados para a realização do exercício. Segue-se um período de comentários e perguntas/respostas
A apresentação oral é obrigatória, tendo que participar todos os elementos do grupo, e juntamente com o trabalho de grupo escrito correspondem a metade da nota final. Os estudantes que terminarem a avaliação contínua com 8 ou 9 valores ficam habilitados a realizar a prova oral
