This curricular unit aims to show the main musculoskeletal injuries related to the practice of physical exercise and the general principles of care in face of trauma or sports injury. Additionally, this curricular unit addresses preventive strategies (primary, secondary and tertiary) with regard to sports injury, as well as essential knowledge for injury recovery.

Block A - Sports injury S1. General principles of sports injury, types of injury, severity of injuries, acute and overuse injuries. S2. Injury mechanisms: trunk and upper limb. S3. Injury mechanisms: pelvis, hip and thigh. S4. Injury mechanisms: lower limb. S5. Injury recovery process. Block B - Specific prescription in sports injury S6. Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. S7. Fundamentals of the fight against doping, doping substances, their organic effect, and precautions to be taken in athletes under chronic medication. S8. Specific prescription in sports injury. Block C - Atitude perante a lesão e Abordagem à vítima S9. Approach to major and minor sports injury. S10. Basic principles of Basic Life Support, and approach to sports-related concussion.

Objectives
Objectives
LO1. Recognize different injury mechanisms and develop critical thinking about the best strategy for action in the acute phase of the injury and in injury recovery. LO2. Recognize the risk factors for sports injuries and to identify and act on the modifiable factors. LO3. Have the ability to prescribe specific exercises or adapt the exercise to the athlete recovering from injury, or as a preventive strategy. LO4. Acquire basics on first aid and approach to sports injury.

Teaching methodologies
Use of audiovisual resources and teaching materials to enable students to better visualize and contextualize some of the concepts and mechanisms of injury addressed during the course (LM1). Promotion of independent learning, particularly through literature searching and self-directed research (LM2). Discussion and critical appraisal of students' independent work (LM3).
