Class History of Classical Culture

The course unit History of Classical Culture provides an introduction to the cultural legacy of Greco-Roman Antiquity and its influence on the development of European and Portuguese-speaking cultures. As part of the BA in Portuguese Studies, this unit promotes knowledge of the main historical, philosophical, literary, artistic and mythological references of classical culture, which are essential for understanding the Western cultural tradition. Through an interdisciplinary approach, students analyse the continuity and transformation of classical themes, values and models across different periods and cultural contexts. The unit contributes to the development of critical interpretation and historical contextualisation skills, strengthening the understanding of language, literature and culture as forms of knowledge construction, memory and cultural identity.
