Presentation
Presentation
This curricular unit focuses on the study of the historic city, with particular emphasis on architectural construction prior to the widespread use of reinforced concrete. Students will acquire knowledge of traditional building elements and understand how these relate to formal composition, proportion, and scale. The teaching method will be primarily expository, supported by case studies. A key component of the course is the analysis of a real case: students will prepare a diagnostic report on a Pombaline building located in Lisbon, promoting hands-on learning and critical engagement with real architectural challenges.

Syllabus
History of construction through the evolution of traditional building techniques and technologies. The influence of military and religious architecture on the development of techniques, architecture, and the arts. Essential components of traditional construction: foundations, structural systems, façades, roofs, floors, staircases, external and internal openings. -
Objectives
Objectives
Understand the historical evolution of construction techniques and materials traditionally used in both interior and exterior applications. Relate traditional construction systems and materials to different architectural typologies. Identify and describe structural and finishing elements (such as structures, façades, roofs, and cladding), with a particular focus on Pombaline architecture. Develop observation, analysis, and technical communication skills applied to historic buildings.
-
Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
The methodology combines theoretical lectures with practical application in a real context: Theoretical sessions supported by case study presentations. Guided research on Pombaline buildings in Lisbon. A practical exercise involving the diagnostic analysis of a real Pombaline building, identifying its construction system and principal pathologies. This blended approach encourages critical thinking, technical understanding, and written communication through the production of a two-phase practical report, accompanied by regular tutorial support.
