    This curricular unit aims to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge that comprise the different aspects of the Lean management philosophy and the most relevant Operational Excellence models. It covers a broader set of topics than those covered in the Integrated Management Systems, Method Engineering and Production Planning and Control curricular units, including: value chain management, structured problem solving, continuous improvement and kaizen, visual management, total management of the operational flows, among others. The main models of organizational Excellence, such as the European model of the EFQM and the Shingo Model, are also addressed and developed in this course

    Objectives

    It is intended that the students will learn:

    • The fundamental principles of organizational excellence and the dimensions that determine the sustainability of the business in the economic, environmental and social aspects.
    • To employ self-assessment tools in order to identify the organization's strengths and areas for improvement, which will allow the development of action plans.
    • To frame the guiding and supporting principles of the Shingo Model within the scope of cultural transformation processes within an organization.
    • To have a holistic view of the Lean management systems, which covers the planning and deployment of the strategy, the management of the life cycle of initiatives and improvement projects, as well as the daily management of operational processes.
