  • Syllabus

    Syllabus

The semester is based on a longitudinal exercise, which consists of starting with a specific object (chosen and negotiated from a proposed set in order to best articulate with ongoing projects) for a layered investigation of that object; leading to looking at and operating from different points of view (material, historical, social, sensory, spatial, symbolic), translating each layer into pictorial experiences (painting and expanded field).  The following topics will be addressed: Painting and interdisciplinarity: frameworks, examples, and issues. Deviation methodologies: external rules, constraints, systems, protocol, and variation. Materiality and support: unconventional materials, hybrid techniques. Collaboration and contamination: authorship, negotiation. Documentation and process writing: record, archive, decision map, statement. Editing and presentation: selection, sequencing, installation, and communication of the work.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

Formulate a driving question to guide practical research in painting.  Experiment with and integrate techniques, materials, and methodologies outside students' comfort zone, while maintaining conceptual relevance. Document, analyze, and communicate the process (failures, iterations, decisions). Edit and present a coherent body of work, with sustained critical reflection. Think about cultural phenomena from an interdisciplinary perspective.  Apply this knowledge to the interpretation of artistic events on the recent Portuguese and international scene.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

The course uses methodologies focused on practical research and interdisciplinary coordination. The teaching process is structured around a longitudinal exercise that, developed throughout the semester, combines experimentation, critical reflection, and progressive editing of the work. This exercise is complemented by moments of collective criticism. The course promotes collaboration with specialists from other disciplinary areas, who introduce specific methodologies, technologies, and theoretical frameworks (namely sound, writing, performance, photography, and science/technology), enhancing hybrid approaches and broadening the field of research. The integration of documentation practices, reflective writing, and critical editing of work reinforces autonomy, self-assessment skills, and active learning. These methodologies prioritize process, informed experimentation, and the construction of knowledge through artistic practice.
