Arctic Unrest and the Urgency of Protecting the Oceans and the Global Climate

The Universidade Lusófona - Centro Universitário Porto hosted a significant debate on the climate crisis and ocean preservation, highlighting the impact of Arctic ice melt and the crucial role of marine ecosystems in regulating the global climate. Experts emphasised the urgent need for measures to mitigate environmental damage and protect these fundamental resources for life on the planet.

During the open lecture, it was stressed that the oceans perform vital functions, such as absorbing large amounts of CO2 and producing approximately 70% of the planet’s oxygen. Another key issue discussed was the impact of Atlantic waters on the Arctic, a phenomenon known as "Atlantification", which accelerates the melting of polar ice caps, jeopardising local ecosystems and the survival of indigenous populations.

Participants reinforced the importance of a global commitment to ocean preservation, considering them as common assets of humanity (Global Commons or Planetary Commons). Additionally, the need to value and respect the traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples, such as the Sami in Scandinavia, who have been dealing with the impacts of climate change in the region for centuries, was emphasised.

Professor João Tavares, who led the open lecture, highlighted the interconnection between different global ecosystems, warning that the degradation of one directly impacts the others. He also underlined the need for investment in environmental education and technological innovation to develop sustainable solutions that minimise the damage caused by human activity in the oceans.

The topic has gained increasing prominence on the global agenda, with initiatives from the United Nations (UN), such as the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) and the proclamation of 1998 as the International Year of the Ocean. The event at Universidade Lusófona reinforced the need to raise awareness and promote public policies geared towards marine sustainability and mitigating the effects of climate change.
