On 3 September 2025, Lusófona University – Porto University Centre hosted the conference “Customs Impacts and Economic Opportunities in Bilateral Trade – Luso-Brazilian Reflections”. Coordinated by Professor Catherine Maia from the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Lusófona University, and Professor Paulo Henrique Reis de Oliveira from the School of Advanced Studies in Law and International Relations (EDRIN), the event focused on analysing the bilateral relations between Brazil and Portugal, with an emphasis on customs impacts and trade opportunities arising between the two countries.

Throughout the afternoon, the distinguished guests Dr Jeniffer Adelaide Marques Pires, President of the Customs Law Committee of the Brazilian Bar Association / Rio de Janeiro (OAB/RJ), and Dr Amanda Pires, Member of the same Committee, explained how Brazil can benefit from Portugal’s mediation. Both discussed the advancement of Brazilian international trade and the ways in which Portugal can facilitate the entry of European products and services. Finally, they also revisited the implications of the Trade Agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, highlighting Portugal’s strategic role as a link between Brazil and the European market.

The event provided a space for academic and professional dialogue, encouraging the exchange of experiences and a deeper understanding of the regulatory changes affecting bilateral trade. The conference also underscored how tariff barriers and value chains may be influenced by this agreement, creating new opportunities for economic integration.

Professor Ana Cristina Almas, also a speaker and lecturer at Lusófona University, emphasised the importance of the event, stating that it “was an enriching experience and a very valuable space for debate.”

In an interview, Dr Jéssica Adelaide Marques Pires expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to discuss issues of foreign trade: “It was a very enriching exchange, addressing matters that both countries share in common and that can enhance our international relations.”

The event not only strengthened the ties between Brazil and Portugal but also opened doors for future collaborations and discussions on bilateral trade. The coffee break, offered by Kincaid Mendes Vianna Advogados and CEAD Francisco Suárez, provided an additional networking moment among participants, further enriching the event experience.
