Cinema, Culture and the City Come Together Again at ULusófona

On 18 September, Building 3 at ULusófona – Porto University Centre once again opened its doors to the community for another evening of open-air cinema as part of the Great Cinema on Campus series. The initiative aims to establish the institution as a meeting point for experiencing cinema, culture and the city of Porto itself.

Following the opening session on 11 September with Persepolis (2007), by Marjane Satrapi, the second screening featured 24 Hour Party People (2002), directed by Michael Winterbottom.

The film takes audiences into Manchester’s underground music scene and the rise of the legendary club The Haçienda, from the late 1970s through to the 1990s, on a journey shaped by excess, culture and artistic freedom.

The screening was introduced by Peter Castro, a Portuguese event producer, DJ, content creator and author, for whom the film holds a special significance. In an interview with Notícias Lusófona, he highlighted the importance of initiatives of this kind in the city of Porto, advocating for more events capable of attracting the local community and creating new meeting places for those who live in the city, beyond the tourist audience.

Following 24 Hour Party People, the series continues with two further open-air screenings throughout September and October. Different films and guests connected to Porto’s artistic scene will continue to explore the theme of rebellion in creation, as part of a programme designed to bring together cinema, culture and the city.
