Faculty of Law students visit the Office of the Prosecutor-General of Republic

On 18 February, 18 students from the Faculty of Law of Lusófona University, under the supervision and guidance of Professor Paulo Sargento, undertook a study visit to the Office of the Prosecutor-General of the Republic.

The headquarters of the Office of the Prosecutor-General of the Republic is housed in Palácio Palmela, on Rua da Escola Politécnica in Lisbon. It was built between 1792 and 1794 by the architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa as his personal residence. The palace later passed to the Palmela family in the 19th century following the marriage of D. Domingos de Sousa Holstein to the daughter of the 1st Count of Póvoa. Only from 1977 onwards did it begin to serve as the headquarters of the Office of the Prosecutor-General of the Republic, a function it continues to fulfil today.

The students were privileged to enjoy a guided tour led by Dr Sandra Belo, Head of the Protocol and Events Office of the Office of the Prosecutor-General of the Republic. The history of the building, together with special reference to the numerous and beautiful works of art that adorn it, as well as the magnificent garden that surrounds it, provided a remarkable journey into a unique cultural and historical universe, vividly conveyed through the distinguished guide’s engaging narrative and empathetic approach.

Following the visit, the students attended an outstanding lecture on the Public Prosecution Service, in its multiple dimensions and responsibilities, delivered by Public Prosecutor Dr Maria Raquel Rocha, member of the High Council of the Public Prosecution Service. The lecture, truly exceptional from both a pedagogical and scientific standpoint, prompted a series of questions from the students, which the Public Prosecutor kindly and clearly addressed to the benefit of all those present.

Several moments were captured in a brief photographic report prepared by the students, who regarded the visit as extraordinarily positive, as clearly reflected in the group photograph that will undoubtedly remain a cherished memory for all who had the privilege of taking part.
