Primitiva, an independent magazine of journalism and culture, comes to ULusófona

Primitiva is an independent magazine dedicated to stories from around the world, with travel as its central axis, embracing the print format as a space of preservation and resistance. Inspired by leading international projects in the field of independent publishing, it combines journalism, design and photography to build an archive of narratives centred on human experiences, cultures and ways of life.

Vanessa Ribeiro-Rodrigues, lecturer of the curricular unit and responsible for this presentation, considers it a “premium magazine”, an example of “humanised and close journalism”, which reaches the public sphere with the “aim of telling human and unknown stories, with details of people’s private lives, their customs and their cultures”, in order to make us feel closer to the world at a time when it is “full of noise”.

One example of these stories is by explorer Filipe Morato Gomes, one of the magazine’s founders, titled “Ma’nene, When caring for the dead is an act of love”, which explores how a community on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, celebrates family bonds.

The session featured the participation of three of Primitiva’s founders: journalist Luísa Pinto, designer and creative director Fábio Alves, and journalist Rui Barbosa Batista.

During the presentation, the editorial concept of Primitiva and the development of its visual identity were discussed, which “follows a logic of returning to origins, to ancestry”, explains Vanessa Rodrigues.

The presentation also “lifted the veil on the second volume of the publication”.

The session provided insight into the magazine’s identity and creative process, as well as how print continues to be used as a means of preservation in an increasingly digital media landscape.
