Postgraduate Programme in Conflict Mediation in School Contexts
Driven by the need to update her knowledge and strengthen her communication and mediation skills, Vilma Teles Martelo, a graduate of the Postgraduate Programme in Conflict Mediation in School Contexts at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre, shares her experience of a demanding and transformative journey, highlighting how this programme enables the practical application of mediation and contributes to more inclusive educational environments and to the fulfilment of the right to education.
“My name is Vilma Teles Martelo, and I was a student in the 14th edition of the Postgraduate Programme in Conflict Mediation in School Contexts at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre.
What motivated me to choose this postgraduate programme? Drawing on the wisdom of my mother, she pointed out that what I really needed was to update my knowledge in the field of Behavioural Sciences, particularly in the area of pedagogy. As a graduate in Educational Sciences, I naturally felt the need to continue along the path of lifelong learning.
How would I describe my journey throughout the postgraduate programme? Above all, it was a demanding and challenging experience, because I wanted to put into practice everything I was learning during the course.
Were there any experiences that particularly marked me? I would highlight the initial readings I undertook in the field of School Mediation. One of the key references in Conflict Mediation in School Contexts is the book School Conflict Mediation: From Theory to Practice, by Professor Elisabete Pinto da Costa. I must admit that it was only after completing the postgraduate programme that I truly understood its meaning, its importance and its full scope.
Among the main lessons I learned, I would emphasise interpersonal communication. It is essential, and it was undoubtedly a skill that I acquired during this programme.
Regarding the support provided by the lecturers and the institution throughout my academic journey, it was absolutely outstanding. Whenever I needed help, and I believe the same applied to my classmates, the teaching staff were always approachable and genuinely interested in clarifying any questions we raised.
Through the Postgraduate Programme in Conflict Mediation in School Contexts, we can effectively fulfil the right to education, which belongs to everyone and is a fundamental human right.
Thank you.”
